Recent visit to Jacquesson house in Champagne and tasting with Jean-Herve Chiquet confirmed the extraordinary calibre of this wine….. Jacquesson is the oldest independent family owned champagne house and was Napoleon's favourite house. The family is deeply wedded to concept of terroir including organic practices in the vineyard…Incredible depth, elegance and finesse here. A blanc de blanc style (52% chardonnay, 24% pinot, 24% pinot meunier) exclusively from grand and premier cru vineyards, base wines were fermented in old oak casks on lees. They champion quality ahead of champenoise obsession with similarity and consistency-they replaced the all important non vintage wine with a numbered cuvee Cuvee No 733 to identify and celebrate the spectacular 2005 vintage which comprises most of the blend. Their vineyards are in Grand Cru villages of Ay, Avize and Oiry and premier Cru of Hautvillers, Dizy and Mareuil-sur-Ay. Even Paul Krug cut his teeth at Jacquesson before relocating to start his own show later in Reims. Jacquesson has been awarded 3 stars (the best and maximum ranking!) in Le Classement by La Revue du Vin de France. Le Classement is a ranking of the 1300 best domaines in France and only 56 domaines in France have 3 star status. Jacquesson together with Krug, Salon and 3 other champagne producers were awarded the 3 star status… This is the best of the best. Sublime…Do not miss out! RRP: $ 95 Special Price $69.99
These guys have always made fine bubbly (pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot meunier) sourcing fruit from cool climate vineyards of Whitlands in Victorian alpine country… Not only a gold and trophy at Adelaide (Aust’s most prestigious wine show) but gold medal Sydney and Queensland wine shows too… Halliday is a fan too and wrote it up in this yr’s Top 100:”…, considerable complexity on the bouquet and palate, with nutty brioche nuances; it finishes with energy and hence considerable length.” Can’t go wrong for summer RRP $27

Basically in the yrs Salon is not produced, the grapes go into Delamotte, so extraordinary quality and value. Impressive bubbly from Touraine in the Loire Valley, France. 100% chenin blanc with 18 to 24 months on 'lees' imparting complex bready flavours to compliment the delicate aromas of quince and apple, which are typical of the variety. RRP $28
Founded in 1864 in Épernay, this traditional Champagne house ferments all base wines and reserve wines in oak barrels contributing depth and complexity. Chadonnay 45% , Pinot Noir 12% , Pinot Meunier 43% with no malolactic fermentation. Complex and powerful flavours brimming with ripe apple, lemon/ lime zest ...layers of savoury flavours of bread and roast nuts. Dare I say it reminded me of Krug, Bollinger. High Pinot Meunier component giving it aromatics/ lift and the chardonnay imparting lemon zing. Deluxe quality and value here. 94pts Peter Bourne, Gourmet Traveller Wine. Live it up! Some Reviews: “NV Alfred Gratien Brut is a very complex wine with an excellent mix of red and white grapes. Toast and vanilla overtones lend further character" ... “a bold style, with savoury, nutty lees flavours" "It’s very concentrated ... a hint of oak and lots of character”. Duane Coates is one of the quiet achievers of the Australian Wine Scene ( Masters in Oenology and an MBA from Adelaide University & soon to become a Master of Wine). His winemaking philosophy is simple: the highest quality fruit from sustainable vineyards ( some organic), harvest when properly ripe and a natural winemaking approach (minimal intervention - wild yeasts, unfined, no additions of tannin, enzyme and acid). Huon Hooke said: “ Every wine I’ve tasted of McLaren Vale’s Duane Coates has been excellent…” Highly impressive wines – a style that bridges the gap between fruit driven Australian style and savoury complex wines of old world Europe. A blend of selected parcels from Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. Sparkling Shiraz at its best. RRP: $24
The Dal Zotto family have produced Australia’s first sparkling Prosecco. Their italian ancestors would be proud of this fine sparkler...plenty of finesse and zest here in this non vintage bubbly. RRP $26
Fine sparkling shiraz made by this leading Margaret River producer..... Wild plum, dark chocolate, black truffle and aniseed all come to mind when tasting this. A friend described this a "liquid black forrest cake" although it has some savoury more-ish characters in there too. RRP $20

Padthaway Estate ( steeped in history) was the first vineyard in australia to plant champagne varieties specifically for sparkling production. They have an original champagne press to gently whole bunch press the pure free-run juice from the grapes. The Izzie is a blend of handpicked pinot noir and chardonnay grapes then aged on yeast lees. A refreshing bubbly with tropical, citrus zing, hints of french patissier and some creaminess. Fine bead and mouthfilling persistent fruit on the finish. Great quality and value here RRP $21
"BEST OF THE BEST - SPARKLING" - James Halliday's 2011 Australian Wine Companion - 95 points - 5 RED STAR WINERY. Serious pedigree here- (all Wendouree fruit - most from the 99 year old vineyard). Of this superb Sparkling Shiraz, winemaker Stephen George said: “2002 was simply a magnificent year… described somewhat heroically by Jukes & Stelzer in Taste:Food and Wine 2008 as “…among the best sparkling reds ever made” Of all our sparkling shiraz’s we have made, the ’02 (at least at this stage of its life would have to be my personal favourite): there’s something about its flavour and texture that gives it an aged pinot character. Flavours are complex showing mushroom and bramble rather than simply fruit... with the long dry finish reflecting a beautiful balance between added fortified shiraz and natural tannin. Drink now or age for further integration and complexity.”. Nick Stock from Wine Business Magazine could not contain his enthusiasm “… as good as any Sparkling Shiraz ever made in this country.” Honourable mention and 95 points in Hallidays Top 100 Wines for 2009. Do not deny yourself the pleasure of this superb sparkling shiraz. Limited. RRP: $52
