Ravensworth Marsanne 2007

White Rhone varieties love the Canberra growing conditions – hot days and cold nights – and Bryan and Jocelyn Martin’s Marsanne in particular is superb. Leaner and more delicate than previous vintages but still with complex notes of stonefruit, nuts and citrus. So darn good.

Gary Walsh from Winorama gives it 92/100 – “It's mid-weight like a Chardonnay, has a touch of warmth poking through and finishes dry and flinty. A paradoxical wine - it's a great food style because it's dry and fairly neutral but it also challenges you and demands your attention with every sip. I think it needs time in bottle to show its best but meanwhile you might like to decant it for best results."

A complex and exciting blend of Semillon, Marsanne, Ugni Blanc, Vermentino and Viognier. A savoury Mediterranean style white with a subtle yet deep bouquet of citrus rind, almond nougat, hay and frangipani flowers and pear. Medium bodied, lovely mid palate texture and freshness! Decant this wine.
When quizzed on the name of this wine, Pete Schell said that most wines seem to fall into a “masculine” or a “feminine” style. When he first made this wine back in 2001, he felt it couldn’t be categorised – it was a bit of both. Like the song “Lola” says “she walked like a woman and talked like a man”.

Each year, Jed’s three young Australian winemakers travel to the Uco Valley in Argentina to craft wines that express the unique characters of this acclaimed alpine region. They were hugely impressed with the Uco Valley in Mendoza (450 year history of winemaking) as a unique place to make wine with its fresh snowmelt water (from the Andes), crisp mountain air, high altitude ( 1250 m) and pure UV light. Mendoza is famous for producing the world’s finest Malbec but it is the cooler sites of Uco Valley that have recently been discovered as the best. This pristine environment produces naturally balanced wines which require minimal intervention in both the vineyard and winery.

An early picking provides zippy freshness followed by a later picking for fruit richness. Aromas of juicy nectarine, white peach, hints of spring flowers... Rich purity of fruit, textural on the palate with lovely cool climate zing.RRP $25

Coates Consonance Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Duane Coates is one of the quiet achievers of the Australian Wine Scene ( Masters in Oenology and an MBA from Adelaide University & soon to become a Master of Wine). His winemaking philosophy is simple: the highest quality fruit from sustainable vineyards ( some organic), harvest when properly ripe and a natural winemaking approach (minimal intervention - wild yeasts, unfined, no additions of tannin, enzyme and acid).

Huon Hooke said: “ Every wine I’ve tasted of McLaren Vale’s Duane Coates has been excellent…” Highly impressive wines – a style that bridges the gap between fruit driven Australian style and savoury complex wines of old world Europe.

A blend of 67% barrel-fermented Semillon (25% new French) from Mt Compass and Adelaide Hills, with 33% Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc fermented in stainless steel. Highly recommend this. RRP: $24

Dou Rosa Branco White 2007

Quinta de la Rosa and the Bergqvist family have been making port from their spectacular steep-terraced vineyards on the banks of the Douro (nr Pinhao) since the early 19th century and since the decline of port consumption they have been making some impressive red table wine…Jorge Moreira, winemaker of the year by the Revista dos Vinhos (the “Decanter magazine of Portugal”at their annual dinner in Feb 2010) since taking the reins as winemaker in 2002 has taken the quality of their wines to another level.

Jorge sourced fruit (white port varieties Codega and Rabigato) from higher vineyards above the Upper Douro … explosive citrus freshness, flintiness with round savoury character that is incredibly more-ish! Always a true sign of quality when you taste a wine with a friend over lunch and before you know it the bottle is gone! Loved this Portuguese white!
