Arguably australia’s finest Riesling - the first vintage goes back to 1968. Steingarten is German for garden of stones and 1962 Colin Gramp planted this vineyard in decomposed schist rock! This steep hillside vineyard in the Barossa ranges behind Rowland Flat back provide the ultimate struggle for the vines….(the enduring perversity of viticulture that a vine yields its finest wines under the greatest stress or adversity.) This fine riesling has been carefully cellared and will age for another 2 decades.

The Gisselbrecht family has been producing wines in Alsace since the 17th century. Today the family owns around 17 hectares of land in the best locations of Dambach la ville. The Vineyards have been acquired throughout the centuries patiently, as the best parcels became free. They are situated in the areas of Dambach la ville in the middle of the wine road in Alsace and the surrounding villages named Epfig, Scherwiller, Chatenois, Nothalten. The family also owns parcels in the Grand Cru Frankstein and also buys some grapes in the Grand cru Muenchberg. 8 wks of perfect weather before harvest lead to healthy ripe fruit with beautiful acidity (in 2007 many of France’s wine regions were awash with rain but Alsace was spared thanks to Alsace’s sheltered location between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine river) Elegant aroma of floral, of green apple, mint, and grapefruit. Rich and yet delicate and clean on the palate....love the lemon fresh zing on the finish. Sante! Serve with fish, seafood, goats cheese and charcuterie. RRP$35

TROPHY Adelaide Hills Wine Show. “Best Riesling vintages at their very cool site are the warmest ones…..even the ferocity of the 2008 March heatwave doesn’t seem to have contradicted this view. It’s testament to the quality of early ripening season as well as the considerable vine age (28 years) that grape flavours peaked early allowing picking before sugar and alcohol skyrocketed so avoiding …an unbalanced wines. The 08 shows lime, flowers and bath salts on the nose and has a full yet soft and delicate palate ( fruit purity of lime and lemon)..It finishes with crisp acidity…”. Stephen George. 94 pts – “Excellent overall ..” James Halliday 2010 Australian Wine Companion 94 pts - “This is one of the Adelaide Hills’ finest expressions of Riesling.” Tyson Stelzer, Wine 100 August 09.
