This leading Gippsland winery ( chardonnay and Pinot Nori specialist) has done well here. Classic fine cool climate barrel fermented chardonnay at it's best, only 20% malolactic fermentation and hence only a touch butterscotch-they like to highlight the delicate fruit that they can grow in the cool climate of Victoria's Gippsland. Their 08 shiraz was released recently following rave reviews of previous vintages. Beautiful aromatic nose of blackberry, balanced by hints of licorice,black olives and spice. Halliday is impressed with this Adelaide Hills vineyard and olive oil producer, awarding Bird in Hand the highest 5 star winery rating. 2007 was hot and dry and great for fruit ripeness- winemaker Andrew Nugent says “2007 vintage was their best vintage yet”. Newly released 07 is a baby but a spectacular follow on from 06 (Halliday 95pts and Best of the Best). Had great fortune of finding the last 12 cases of this back vintage shiraz a couple of months ago. It was such a hit at a recent wedding that white drinkers were reaching for it! This is classic bottle aged shiraz (Adelaide plains fruit) made by Brett Howard who began winemaking at Hardys in the early ‘80s (he sources fruit from premium vineyards of South Australia’s Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale). Rich ripe dark berry fruit, a lick of wild raspberry and hints of leather/tobacco. Great length, fine grained tannins and beautifully balanced by savoury French oak. The 2009 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc was recently listed in Gourmet Traveller Wine (Apr/May 2010) as a Top 100 New Release. “Plenty of pure, focused fruit flavours with succulent tropical fruits contrasting with red capsicum and a hint of nettles. A ripe example of the Awatare style. A stylish wine with power. 91 points. 4 stars." Their 2008 release was also listed as a Best Buy under $20 in Oct /Nov Australian Gourmet Traveller wine. The 2009 vintage was a better season overall, long and consistent. What amazes me is the balance and complexity of this Sauvignon Blanc which held its head high when we tasted it alongside Isabel Sauvignon Blanc which retails for $28. Staggering quality and value.
