coates wines mclaren vale

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Duane Coates is one of the quiet achievers of the Australian Wine Scene ( Masters in Oenology and an MBA from Adelaide University & soon to become a Master of Wine). His winemaking philosophy is simple: the highest quality fruit from sustainable vineyards ( some organic), harvest when properly ripe and a natural winemaking approach (minimal intervention - wild yeasts, unfined, no additions of tannin, enzyme and acid).

Huon Hooke: “ Every wine I’ve tasted of McLaren Vale’s Duane Coates has been excellent…..”

Highly impressive wines – a style that bridges the gap between fruit driven Australian style and savoury complex wines of old world Europe.

The Vine Press will be hosting a fun stand up tasting of Coates Wines as well as Curly Flat, 2 of Australia’s leading producers, Thurs 15 April…. . $25 per pers. 6.30-8pm.
The Castlereagh Boutique Hotel, 169 Castlereagh Street, Sydney.  Contact Rhys on rhys@thevinepress.com or phone 02 9908 4994. (more…)

harewood estate wines and french cheese tasting 9th september 2009

New World meets Old World

The Vine Press together with Fourth Village Providores Mosman recently presented a fun and educational sit down tasting of a selection of small regional Farmhouse cheeses from farms and affineurs from all over France, expertly matched with wines from Harewood Estate from Denmark, Western Australia.

Winemaker James Kellie cut his teeth at Howard Park before he and his family purchased the Harewood vineyard in 2003.  Hard work is paying off with extraordinary success in 6 years receiving trophies galore and the coveted 5 red star rating (the highest recognition possible from Australia’s most influential wine critic James Halliday awarded to the top 7% of wineries).  Easy to see why the Great Southern region has unmatched versatility and quality for winemaking.

These great new world wines were paired with an array of cheeses from famous cheese making regions such as Normandy, Ill de France and the Basque region of the Pyrenees Mountains and presented by Fourth Villages cheese specialists.
