Featuring this month - Tim Smith Wines
Tim Smith is an extraordinarily talented Barossa winemaker. He draws inspiration from the Southern Rhone appellation and is a huge fan of wines of Bandol. He seeks out old vine Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz from his Barossa growers and crafts “Rhone Style” reds with fragrance, elegance and power. He has worked 20 odd vintages as winemaker at Yalumba, Chateau Tanunda and now works closely with 16 growers in Eden and Barossa.
We were impressed with Tim Smith’s entire line up of wines at a recent tasting. His passion for the Mataro grape certainly shines in his Mataro Grenache Shiraz 2012 - a blend of 65% Mataro, 25% Grenache, 10% shiraz from old Barossa and Eden Valley vines. 94 points James Halliday and 95 points Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “… Spice, nuts, flowers, blood plum, a little chocolate and liquorice - sweetly fruited, yet it pulls savoury and firm … is this a delicious wine.”
2012 was a winemakers dream of a vintage .. evident here in this seriously impressive Shiraz 2012, sourced from 6 Barossa sites ranging in age from 20 years up to 110+ years! Pedigree in spades for a ridiculously modest price! Fragrance, elegance and power! 94 points Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
Other Favourites this month...
The Canella family are Prosecco pioneers and have become almost synonomous with Prosecco itself! The Canella vineyards are in the heart of the historical appellation Conegliano, at the perfect medium altitude where grape-ripening is more gradual, the resulting fragrance more intense and the natural fruit acidity at its best .. this extra richness makes this a fine accompaniment for the entire meal! Aromas of peach, apple, pear and citrus balanced beautifully by the zingy acidity with a subtle hint of sweetness, richness and silky-smooth texture. Perfect with Antipasto or freshly shucked oysters
A must try for those in the market for a cracking value, dry Provencal rose! 70 per cent Syrah and 30 per cent Grenache, the light colour belies the intensity of the wine - a wildly floral and fresh herb-scented perfume with a wickedly sexy, pulpy mid-palate texture with a crunchy dry and super savoury finish. Screams for another sip! The perfect summer wine for a ridiculous price. Vive La France!
Intense, yet delicate fruit characters and pristine acid structure are a highlight of this fine Margaret River Chardonnay from one of the finest wineries in the region. “A model for modern chardonnay with its lingering palate and finesse ..” Ray Jordan’s Top 100 Whites of 2012; “A very complex and composed chardonnay …” 93 points, Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2013
