Featuring this month - Ashton Hills - “The Burgundy of the Adelaide Hills.”
Ashton Hills has the oldest pinot vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. Winemaker, Stephen George is also winemaker for the iconic Wendouree in the Clare Valley- He is allocated precious parcels of Wendouree fruit every year to make his superb Galah wines. He refers to his dry grown Piccadilly Valley vineyard planted back in 1982 as the “Burgundy of the Adelaide Hills”. Much experimentation with pinot noir clones (15 clones planted) and trellising has resulted in sublime pinot noir.
Ashton Hills has received many awards including the coveted 5 Red star rating from James Halliday - “Outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality ”. Their Pinot and Sparkling were both listed in the Best of the Best by James Halliday in his 2010 Wine Companion. Their 07 Reserve Pinot was awarded “Best New World Pinot” by Decanter magazine. No doubt about it, Stephen George knows his stuff!

My favourite pinot of our recent tasting - superb intensity and elegance shining here. Stephen George says: “….The nose of the ’07 Estate jumps out of the glass…. forest-floor/gamey aromas follow on to the fruit-sweet, silky palate which has power without weight. Moderate tannin and good natural acidity with beautiful texture and a long, lingering finish.” 95 points James Halliday.

“…. a trophy winner at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show. Easy to taste why. Awesome. Floored me from the first sip. Gloriously expressive, but characterized by its long, smoky, stalky, minerally length. Has precision written all over it. Lots of upfront flavour, but it then drills on and on. Perfect tannin structure…. this is a brilliant wine. 96 Points “ Campbell Mattinson 22/6/10. The 2007 was voted “ Best New World Pinot” and 19/20 points by Decanter magazine. This newly released 2008 is a definite step up -one for the cellar.
